(Im a Guy)-How can I grow longer hair when its wavy?

Hey guys quick question,

First off, Im a guy. Im trying to grow out my hair, to about shoulder length if possible. The problem is, I am Puerto Rican, so I have wavy hair. At the length it is at now (about my mid-ear) it starts to flip in the back of my head and on the sides. When it dries completely, it sometimes just sticks out all over the place. It also tends to just frizz everywhere if I do anything physical.

Everytime I go an get a trim, I feel as if the person cuts it too short, if you know what I mean. Im at the point now where I do need another trim though, as the back of my head is a definite flip-fest. Haha.

Anyways, are there any tips that you (guys or girls) have for me that I could use? Something that could maybe I could model after? Anything would be a great help.

Ask your hairdresser to thin your hair. She can thin it out so it isn't so thick and wavy. Also, make sure you go for regular trims. During these appointments, have the hairdresser trim the ends so you don't get split ends and it won't flip out as much. Also, my hair tends to frizz too. Try a product called "Silk Drops" by FX Special Effects. It does wonders for frizzy hair, just don't use too much.

I have medium, wavy hair. And i also have layers. I think that it defiantly adds volume to your hair because it's not just straight across. When you straighten your hair, the ends kind of get a little frizzy at times. But if you use Bio-silk gel, it really gets rid of it, without the greasy feeling that some gel's might can do.

Dont go out and buy anything expensive.

First: Purchase a mild Shampoo (To Clarify hair, I will explain why)

Second: TRIM your hair ends (May 1 1/2 to 2 inches)

Third: Here's the magic part: Mix olive oil, almond oil, coconut oil, avocado oil and a "little" honey, (honey u will have to heat so it can blend). Either leave on ALL day or all night (if all nite, DONT use honey)

Use a teaspoon of every oil and honey,.... a little more if ur hair is long or a little less if ur hair is short

Repeat this 3-4 times a week, your hair will grow like a weed, fortify, reconstruct, moisturize, soften %26amp; remove all frizz I promise,..... and it will be super shiny!!!!

The clairifying shampoo will help take the oil off your hair when u shower

You can also use a conditioner but get a light conditioner that wont wiegh ur hair down, becuz u can over condition, I use herbl essences "clean happy" conditioner.

I use a flat iron...you can buy them cheap from Walmart or Target. :) Get one that heats in 60 seconds so you can use it whenever you want (just make sure you don't straighten your hair when its wet...that can cause damage).

There are specialist products for EXACTLY this sort of thing, you'll probably need one or two of those, along with ceramic straightners... you may want to check this out with a local good quality hairdressing unit.

Look for 'smoothing' products and especially those designed for 'humid environments'. It sounds like you might have quite thick hair as well, so maybe you could also explore getting some of the heavier sections of your hair cut out (be careful with this, some hairdressers use 'thinning' scissors, which just seem to plump out the hair even more - get them to take out larger sections which will take more weight out of your hair). Less weight, plus some product, short burst of heated ceramic straightners = happy girl with straight shiny hair.

Rollers, curling irons and or flat irons with curved edges will do the trick.

Be patient though. It takes time to master the technique. Once you do, you will get your hair done a lot quicker and just how you want it. Good luck.

Yes, you need to get a layered cut. This will allow volume to be distributed more evenly in your hair instead of it all being at the bottom and coming out the way it does.

You don't want the layers to be too short, as the first poster said. Because if you ever straighten it, it will look like a mullet (my mother-in-law does this and it looks awful!). And even when it is curly, it will be too much volume at your crown and still have the resemblence of a mullet. Of course this is depending on how long it is. When you get layers, this automatically thins out your hair to some degree. A razor is only meant for use on thin, fine hair to add dimenion. Not curly hair! To thin curly hair properly it should be layered.

Try having some layers cut on the crown of your head, this will make it pop up a little better and add some height. Also have your ends thinned out so they will lay flatter and not spread out so far on the bottom of your hair.

Definitely a layered haircut will do the trick. Also, try using some mousse to elevate your hair near the roots and some gel or cream to define the longer pieces. I've yet to try it, but supposedly if you put in clips (like the long ones a hairdresser uses to section hair) near the roots, that will take the weight off the hair when it dries so you won't get that squished look on top.

I have thick wavy hair and yes people say that they wish they had this kind and when i see girls with thick curly hair on TV, I want it! Ironic isn't it? See, my hair is thick and curly, until I comb it and then the wavy comes out. Either way, it's not smooth and shiny. I get my hair cut regularly and wash and condition it. What else should I do so that it can come out smooth and shiny?

We were separated at birth, I think! haha I only tried to straighten my hair once and it was disastrous, just turned my hair into a fro, so I gave up on that idea.

What I usually do is brush and comb it out *before* I shower. I use shampoo and conditioner for curly hair, though I can't tell you any specific brand -- I tend to switch every so often. Sometimes it's Garnier, sometimes it's Dove, just depends. Every now and then I'll also use Aussie's 3 Minute Miracle stuff -- smells good and it helps tame frizz. After I get out, I'll finger comb through my hair to get out the tangles, and then put in Dove's Curl Conditioning Mousse. I normally hate mouse, but Dove's is really light and non-sticky, and it works miracles. %26lt;3 Anyway, then when it dries I've got light, bouncy, thick curls. Next day, I don't brush it -- again, I finger-comb through my hair to loosen up any tangles, then use Garnier's Smoothing Milk cream to tame the bushiness -- and, incidentally, it works better for me than Aussie's Sprunch Spray.

Moral of the story: don't use a brush on your hair after you get out of the shower. It'll just make you frizz up like crazy. Use a comb if you have to, but brushes are hell on thick, curly hair.

my hair is VERY thick and VERY curly. Let it be natural. I used to straighten it and it was more trouble than it's worth. I use TIGI Curls Rock curl amplifyer and then I add some mousse. Use a difuser when blow drying. My hair stays very soft when using those products and it looks shiny too. Try not to wash it too much because that can cause it to dry out.

Well I had the same problem and I ended up cutting my hair short, occupational requirement, but bofore that I would use shine serum, i like John Frieda, and then use a shampoo specifically made to protect from heat damage. i hope that helps. good luck

Use leave in conditioner and coca butter. I had the same problem my hair is real thick, and curly. When I wash my hair and dry it gets poof like an Afro I can't stand it. But after years of struggling with my hair. I noticed that if I wash my hair with a maintenance shampoo and conditioner. Then use a leave in conditioner my hair is kinda curly kinda wavy in some spots. Letting it air dry the style I put it in holds like it has spritz on it. If you want to invest 30 bucks in a Caruso Hairsetter, you can probably get one on-line. It's steam and heats up quickly. I've had mine for about 10 years and I also have very straight/fine hair - I swear by it.. If you're in a hurry you can put the curlers in and by the time you get done rolling you can start to take the first ones out. I usually keep mine in for 5 minutes though. To get the wave (instead of curl) I curl and twist the roller as I go up.

Well, i have wavy, thick hair...sometimes, i like to embrace my curly hair, so i take a shower, gently ring the excess water out of my hair (NO TURBAN), then i put leave in conditioner in and scrunch (gently)...then you scrunch in hair gel (about the size of a quarter), then i let my hair dry while scruching it (let it air dry and occasionaly scrunch it gently (if you disturb the natural hair flow while your hair is drying, then it turns out WEIRD))

If you dont wanna embrace you curly hair, then take a shower, put in leave-in conditioner, and brush it out for a long time (no gel this time), then, throught out the day, straighten you hair with you pointer finger and you middle finger

Wet and wavy hair is not straight! The more you wet it the more it curls. A roller set looks extremely natural on this type of hair. It can be straightened but it still doesn't look like yaki straight! If your planning on leaving your weave in for months get it washed and tightened at the salon for $20- $45.

If you want the wet n wavy look, find a stylist who is really good at weaving that hair with yours to make it look natural. If it's human hair, you can do with it what you please. If you straighten it, you should be able to get the wavy look back by wetting your hair and using a conditioner to maintain that look. I don't have a weave, but when I want the wet n wavy look, I wet my hair and I use a condition called wet n' wavy to maintain the effect. It works well.

Maybe if you cut it real low and keep brushing it everynight waves might start to appear but since your hair is so soft, it might just end up laying complete flat and straight and not real waves. Kinky hair is needed for those types of waves but maybe since your bi-racial they have a 50-50 chance of comming out. lol

You may want to try that new line of shampoos and conditioners from Herbal Essences. They have one called "totally twisted" that's for curly or wavy hair. It helps bring out the curl. I use their volumizing one and it works great.

You should probably get a good sprunch spray as well, when your hair is drying, put the spray or mousse in it (preferably one that does not give your hair that crunch factor) and scrunch it in your hands as it dries. If you have to use a blowdryer, invest in a diffuser. Otherwise, let it air dry

Whereas, if you let it grow out, it will appear straighter. Ask a professional hairstylist what kind of styles work best with thick, wavy hair. I dry my hair with a round brush and straighten it everyday. Over time, this has trained my hair to be straighter and much more cooperative.

What you can do is cut the back short and spike it out and have the front long and cut up diagonal to meet up with the length in the back...really hard to explain..sorry. It's a hair lotion that you can get at your local drug store or beauty supply store. Sally's Beauty Supply also carries it. I did the same thing. My advice, don't do it. My hair was very long(about 14inches past my shoulders) and I wanted to add volume and a little wavy, so I got a perm. It was horrible, my hair was very very dry and damaged and I ended up having to cut about 16 inches off. I regret it very very much.

But my sister got a perm when her hair was about as long as mine was and it worked great for her and she didn't have any problems. I think that if you do it, go to a NICE salon, because if you want to keep your long hair, it is more than worth it.

Use the wellastrate brand they have mild and strong both. Try a patch test and then decide which works better for you, yours is wavy as you said, so mild may do less chemicals though. Its effect will be till your new hair grows because that is virgin hair and its growing from your scalp. So that will be curly u will have to keep touching that up as long as u want straight hair. The hair which you have applied on will stay like that untill u cut it or something. This wellastrate has 2 tubes, one for breaking the curls and the other for making it straight. If u have a longish hairstyle iron it before you apply the second tube. Its the best option to get it done by a professional as it effects last for 6months atleast, so its an investment like u dont have to go on ironing it or spending on it. I'm a guy and I want to have wavy hair not to just last for a day but for a while. I hear it's a 2 hour process is this something I can try @home by myself? because I'm already going to the salon to color it! too much money soo yeah
